Residents in Newtown have reported a 'strong smell' of oil near the River Severn.

Natural Resources Wales are investigating a potential kerosene leak from a property in the town after oil was seen floating in a stream near Park Lane.

It is not currently known where the leak is coming from and how much oil has entered the river and surrounding area.

Open Newtown, a community land trust, said the situation is "under control and being managed daily".

"There is an on-going investigation by Natural Resources Wales, to identify a potential kerosene leak from a property in Newtown.—

"They’ve eliminated a number of properties from their investigation already, but there are thousands of properties in the geographic location of the leak," they said.

"The leak could be from a residential property with a pipe underground. We just don’t know yet.

"They have booms fitted to trap the leak now, which is sporadic in the timing of its spillages, throughout the year, so any current residue should be remains from the recent leak only.

"We have offered to help them identify the source by publishing which area of properties may be the cause of the leak and we’re hoping to get hold of historical drainage maps very soon".

Natural Resources Wales has been asked to comment.
