WREXHAM AFC has announced the club will be donating their £2,000 share of the FA Community Shield Fund to Nightingale House Hospice.

All 124 clubs competing in the FA Cup from the first round onwards receive an equal share of the money raised from the Community Shield to distribute to local community projects.

The Wrexham-based football club have confirmed that Nightingale House Hospice – which provides specialist palliative care, free-of-charge, to patients in our local area with life-limiting illnesses - would be their chosen beneficiaries.

Laura Parry, head of fundraising at Nightingale House, said: “A huge thank you to Wrexham AFC for their generous donation of £2,000. We really do appreciate their ongoing support, especially during this challenging time.

“Donations like this are making a massive difference right now. The hospice team are working hard to adapt to new guidelines and working practices in order to maintain quality care and support for the most vulnerable living in our community during the pandemic.

“Sadly, the hospice now faces a devastating drop in income from donations, closure of our shops and cancelled or postponed events. We were due to be hosting our 25th anniversary party event at the Racecourse Ground earlier this month, a project that we were very much looking forward to working with Wrexham AFC on, however this has unfortunately not been able to go ahead.

“The club’s continued support over the years has really meant a lot and has helped us in our work caring for local people and their families.”

A club spokesman states that they are pleased to support the hospice with this fund, as they had been looking forward to welcoming Nightingale House to the Racecourse for their Party on the Pitch, which unfortunately had to be cancelled due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

It is appreciated that this is a difficult time for charities and the club have wished Nightingale House Hospice well as they continue their amazing work in the community.

Club captain Shaun Pearson said of the donation: “It is massively important the club is making an effort to help out within the community and hopefully this donation can make a difference.”
