BASINGSTOKE’S Citizens Advice bureau has praised the ‘invaluable’ efforts of its volunteers after helping thousands of people in need across the town.

As part of Volunteers’ Week, which runs from June 1 to 7, the charity is thanking volunteers for their contribution not only during this exceptional time, but throughout the year.

Citizens Advice Basingstoke (CAB) has continued giving advice to those in need throughout the coronavirus pandemic thanks to the dedication of its staff and volunteers.

The team quickly rallied to ensure as many people as possible could be helped. Within a matter of days of the lockdown volunteers were kitted out and working from home.

In the last two months volunteers have helped nearly 3,000 people struggling in these difficult times with Universal Credit, employment, debt, relationships, housing, and food shortages.

Queries responded to include an approach from a key worker who had received an NHS letter advising him to stay at home and who was worried how he and his family could survive without a regular income, plus others from people struggling to understand whether they are employed or furloughed, whether they have an employment contract, and how their pay or Universal Credit will be calculated.

CEO Graham Hatcher said: “Throughout the year our wonderful volunteers contribute their time and energy to make a huge difference to peoples’ lives and help keep our vital service running.

“Whether they have been able to continue in their role recently, or have paused their volunteering, their support throughout the year has been truly invaluable.

“Our work is demanding, but very rewarding and I really can’t thank them enough.”

Clients have also praised the efforts of volunteers at the charity. One person who was helped by the service said: “Thank you so much for your help, I was in such a panic and you’ve calmed me right down. I really appreciate what you’ve done today, you’ve been brilliant. Thank you so much.”

Another added: “The support you guys offer is amazing, especially when it’s free of charge. I hope when we come out of this people will pay more attention to those who offer services for nothing in return. Stay safe, take care and give everyone in your workplace a virtual hug and tell them we care.”

CAB volunteer Jane says she’s similarly grateful for the opportunities she has been provided with by helping out at the charity.

“The training and support provided is amazing,” she said. “I feel that I have really grown as a person. I’ve seen life from a different perspective and seen how hard it can be for some people.

“Over the year, I have helped hundreds of different people and can’t believe how much of a difference I have made to so many people. You can see the difference between those coming into the office and those leaving with looks of relief and hope on their faces.”
