Queues formed as tips reopened in Newtown and Brecon today – but officials say they weren't as long as they had feared.

In other parts of Wales the reopening of the tips had brought long waits for people hoping to get rid of their rubbish – there were long queues forming in Wrexham today.

But in Powys, the queues were more modest, with a wait estimated by members of the public to be between half an hour and an hour to use the tips.

Powys Council had put staff at the gates to manage the queues, as it seeks to open the recycling centres in a controlled way to prevent the possible spread of coronavirus.

A spokesman said: "To ensure the safety of residents, our staff and the wider community, the HWRCs have reopened with a number of restrictions, including only allowing a limited number of cars on site at a time in order to comply with governmental social distancing regulations.

"We anticipated that these restrictions would cause delays and this is why we have additional traffic management at the site.

"However, with the sensible cooperation of residents we have not encountered any significant problems at the two sites currently open in Brecon and Newtown."
