POLICE officers have been carrying out essential travel checks in Newtown.

Drivers travelling for non-essential reasons during the coronavirus lockdown will receive fines, and offices were making checks in Newtown this afternoon.

Earlier this week a spokesman for Dyfed Powys Police Newtown said: "We are actively patrolling areas that people are informing us of regarding breach of restrictions."

Despite a penalty increase in England and Scotland this week, governments in Wales and Northern Ireland have confirmed the fines, first introduced in March, will stay the same for now – £60 reduced to £30 if paid within 14 days, rising to £120 for a second and subsequent offences.
