A primary school will reopen for the autumn term with a new name as two schools in neighbouring villages are brought together.

The rebranding of the Welsh medium school as Ysgol Cwm Banwy will follow the formal closure of both the Banw Community Primary School in Llangadfan and Llanerfyl Church in Wales Foundation School on August 31.

The newly named Church in Wales aided school will come into being on September 1, and will be located at the Llangadfan site.

The decision for the new name is set to be taken officially by education portfolio holder, Cllr Phyl Davies on Friday, May 15.

It ends a drawn-out process, which saw the decision to close the schools formalised in September 2019, after it had been agreed by the Powys County Council cabinet in April 2019.

Finance portfolio holder Cllr Aled Davies had led the process as education portfolio holder at the time, Cllr Myfanwy Alexander had to declare an interest as a Llanerfyl School governor.

Part of the decision had been based on pupil numbers which seesawed during 2019.

In January 2019, Banw had 22 pupils and Llanerfyl 28. But by the beginning of the new school year in September there were 34 pupils in Banw and 14 pupils at Llanerfyl.

During the consultation held in the autumn of 2018 , 83 per cent supported merging the existing schools with 14 per cent against.

Of 229 responses, 61 per cent wanted to see the new school established at Banw with 35 per cent against.

In Welsh, Banw Community Primary School is know as Ysgol Dyffryn Banwy.
