A driver was caught by Dyfed-Powys Police doing 120mph on a 60mph road last year, a freedom of information request has revealed.

And the force also snapped somebody driving at 47mph in a 20mph zone, according to the data.

The figures are among those released as part of a survey by insurance website Confused.com, which looks at the fastest speeds recorded around Wales.

The fastest speed caught on camera in 2019 was 135mph in Gwent Police's area – when the driver should have been doing no more than 50.

And one reckless motorist hit 101mph in a 30mph zone, South Wales Police said.

More than 151,000 drivers were caught speeding in Wales in 2019 – a six per cent increase compared to the previous year.

And further research suggests that we could see another increase in 2020, despite the current lockdown conditions, as one in five UK drivers have seen or heard more cars speeding since being on lockdown.

Alex Kindred, car insurance expert at Confused.com, says: “At times like this, when there are fewer cars on the road, it might be tempting to take advantage. But, as our research shows, nearly half of speed cameras are always switched on – so you’re less likely to get away with it than you might think.

“Ultimately, speed limits are in place for a reason – to keep road users and pedestrians safe.

“And with the way speeding fines are calculated, you might face far heftier fines than you realise, with the potential of paying up to 175 per cent of your weekly income.”
