Social distancing and cancelled activities and events during the coronavirus crisis can start to put a strain on mental health.

In the agricultural industry, farmers are used to self-isolating, however the measures put in place can contribute to increased levels of loneliness.

That's why Montgomeryshire's Young Farmers' Clubs are working hard to keep members connected with each other during a "difficult" time.

Huw Jones, County Chairman, said: "Working in agriculture can be extremely isolating and the YFC plays a huge part in combatting rural isolation and promoting positive mental health - some of our members rely on their weekly club meetings as their social activity and one of our main priorities for the duration of the lockdown and beyond is keeping our members engaged and busy with YFC related activities."

"At this time of year, YFC members across Montgomeryshire would usually be busy preparing for the County Rally which is held annually on the May bank holiday weekend, but Covid-19 has meant that club and county activities have been postponed for the foreseeable.

He added: "It is a huge shame for our members, we look forward to so many events over the summer, with the Rally, County Sports and competing at the Royal Welsh Show naming just a few. We want to keep people’s spirits up during this difficult period."

County Times:

Briony Tilsley, Junior Member of the Year, did a weekend takeover on the YFC's social media to promote positive mental health.

Montgomery Young Farmers introduced a Virtual Rally on social media which included cooking, singing and writing poems to thank key workers, and members from all 18 clubs took part in a video promoting the work of British farmers.

Briony Tilsley, of Sarn YFC, opened up discussions surrounding coronavirus and mental health during a social media takeover.

“Overnight I’ve gone from flat out A-level revision to flat out lambing!" Briony said.

"Coping with anxiety about results as well as putting up with a tired dad and two grumpy brothers can be stressful but this isolation has allowed me to appreciate the beautiful countryside in which we live.

"Junior members, we’re all going through this together and the YFC community is stronger than ever and here to support you!”
