Three more cases of coronavirus have been confirmed in Powys, and two more people are known to have died with the disease in the county, officials said today.

The latest deaths take the confirmed number of coronavirus fatalities in county hospitals to nine, although the Office for National Statistics earlier this week put the true figure at closer to 35.

The three new confirmed cases bring the county's total so far to 169, although this figure is also likely to be much higher.

The latest new cases are among 183 across Wales, where there have now been 9,812 confirmed coronavirus cases since the pandemic began.

The country has also recorded 22 more deaths, meaning that 908 people in Wales have lost their lives after catching the disease.

Dr Robin Howe, incident director for the Novel Coronavirus outbreak response at Public Health Wales, said there had been another new testing centre opened in Wales today, although details of how testing will be rolled out in Powys have still to be confirmed.

“The testing centre in the Carmarthen Showground opens today," Dr Howe said.

"The centre will provide drive-through testing for critical workers in west Wales. This will support other existing testing centres across west Wales, which also provide tests for NHS staff and critical workers, including the police, fire and ambulance services, care homes and other local authority staff.

“Based on the new case numbers there is emerging evidence suggesting a levelling-off in the number of new cases of Novel Coronavirus in Wales, which may be an indication of the effectiveness of lockdown measures. However, it is still too early to tell for sure, and it is too soon to end the current social distancing rules."
