Police have reported more people heading out to Welsh beauty spots as the coronavirus lockdown appears to come under strain.

Some people in Powys have reported an increase in traffic on the county's roads from over the weekend, and police have issued a number of tickets under lockdown regulations.

Teams from Welshpool were on patrol at Lake Vyrnwy over the weekend, a spot which would usually have been thriving in the kind of warm weather seen on Saturday.

The Brecon Beacons also proved to be too tempting for some people – four cars carrying six people from Birmingham, two from Bristol and two from Hereford were turned away from Talybont.

In Snowdonia, a group of tourists from London were stopped from climbing Snowdon, while a man from Cumbria reportedly became aggressive with hotel staff when confronted about his own walk up the mountain.

And Machynlleth county councillor Mike Williams said: "A number of my constituents, and I must say I agree with them, have noticed that the roads are considerably quieter as a result of the travel restrictions which have quite rightly been imposed on us all.

"Quite a few local people, including myself, on their daily exercise, noticed that there seemed to be more traffic this weekend than in previous ones.

"Virtually all of the vehicles which passed while we were out on exercise were occupied by people who none of us knew and therefore are highly unlikely to be residing locally on a permanent basis. It seems as though people are gradually becoming a little lackadaisical and venturing out more than they are supposed to."

He also called on people who would have been coming to next weekend's Machynlleth Comedy Festival not to be tempted to venture out anyway.

"For many of those people it would, possibly, have been their annual holiday away and I wonder how many of them will still feel inclined to travel here as had previously been their plan?

"Even if only a small percentage of last year’s 7,000 attendees were to do so it is still too many for our area to bear."

It comes after reports on Friday from teams in Newtown warning that the number of people heading out and about appears to be increasing.
