Police have stepped up checks on Powys' roads after seeing an increase in traffic in recent days.

Teams have been stopping drivers in different parts of the county, having seen more people heading onto the roads, suggesting that the warm weather has proved simply too tempting for some people during the lockdown.

A tweet from the Neighbourhood Policing Team in Llanidloes read: "Officers have been conducting checks at Llanidloes roundabout this afternoon, after seeing an increase in traffic on the roads over the last few days.

"Please remember you should only be travelling for essential purposes."

Meanwhile, Brecon's Roads Policing Team reported stopping drivers and being met with a number of excuses.

One said they were going out to check on their paraglider, another complained about a lack of eggs in their home town to the south in Merthyr, and another was going out to take photographs.

Somebody else had driven 25 miles to get slug pellets.

"Powys does not have a A&E hospital if you have a collision on a non essential journey you are putting extra pressure on Hospitals and @WelshAmbulance," the team tweeted.

On Thursday night, the Newtown Roads Policing Unit issued four tickets under its Covid-19 powers, and arrested one person after being told by a member of the public about a drink driver.

The Welsh Government has also issued a fresh reminder to people to stay at home during the lockdown, with a statement reading: "For now, you must avoid all non-essential travel.

"Travelling to holiday home or a second home is not permitted. Police have powers to enforce this.

"Please stay local for now, and help stop the spread of coronavirus."
