FIREFIGHTERS in Powys have put out a fire which burned up hills near Llangynog, it has been confirmed by police on social media.

The incident began on Tuesday evening, and fire services fought to stop the blaze for more than 24 hours.

Crews from Llanfyllin, Llanidloes, Welshpool, Newtown, Montgomery, Llanfair Caereinion and Knighton all attended the fire, which involved more than 90 hectares of grass and heather.

Llanyfllin Police confirmed on Twitter that fires on hillsides in the Llangynog and Pen-Y-Garnedd areas had been put out, and one person was issued advice regarding the burning of garden waste.

Fire officer Craig Thomas, head of operational response for Powys at Mid and West Wales Fire Service, thanked those who stopped the fires for their efforts.

“Attended the ongoing wildfire Llangynog this afternoon,” he posted on Twitter.

“Crews have been working extremely hard in very difficult conditions and terrain.

“They have stopped the fire entering forestry and protected many properties. Very proud of their work, thank you.”
