Pillowcases are being turned into scrub bags for frontline NHS workers during the coronavirus pandemic.

Rhayader WI members have been busy sewing more than 250 bags for NHS staff so that they can put their uniform into a bag after work to avoid contaminating their home.

The town’s WI members have been “overwhelmed” by the generous donations of cotton fabric and pillowcases from Rhayader residents, hotels, B&Bs, charities and businesses.

Rhayader WI have been inundated with requests for scrub bags, and have so far donated bags to NHS staff at Llandrindod Wells War Memorial Hospital, the University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff, ambulance stations in Llanidloes and Llandrindod Wells, as well as local nursing and care homes.

It began after seeing an appeal on Facebook for NHS scrub bags. The WI decided to have a go at at sewing pillowcases for urgency and quantity.

“As Rhayader WI president I would like to say a big thank you to the members for all their hard work,” Chris Phillips said.

“I set a challenge to make 100 scrub bags for the NHS. A big thanks to the machinists that have made nearly half the amount in 48 hours. Thanks to those who have donated pillow cases and fabric.

“I am overwhelmed by the response of our members and the Rhayader community to my challenge. In one week, eight members have made over 250 bags and another member sewing scrubs.”

She added: “I would like to say a massive thank you to everyone who has been involved, donating, making and getting the bags around safely.

“We will continue to make these bags so long as there is a need and we have supplies to do so.”

Local businesses such as Hafod Hardware and CCF Rhayader have donated nylon cord for the bags.

Tom Jones, from Hafod Hardware said Rhayader’s community spirit is “really special”.

“Members came into the shop saying that they were making wash bags for NHS staff scrubs. I told them that they could take away what they need to help as much as they can.”

He added: “Rhayader is a fantastic place. It really is special.”
