Scarecrows have been springing up in a Powys town to thank key workers who are working around the clock to keep the country safe.

At least 20 have appeared on homes and in gardens across Builth Wells to put smiles on faces during the coronavirus lockdown.

Scarecrows of firefighters, nurses, doctors, farmers, refuse collectors and police officers - and even a big teddy bear doctor - have all taken over Builth Wells.

It started with an idea by the Friends of Builth Wells Primary School, after this year’s town carnival was cancelled. One of the annual traditions in the lead-up to the popular event was a scarecrow competition, but this year they wanted to do something special to bring a bit of cheer to the town.

Anna Jarvis, Builth Wells Fest Carnival vice chair, said: “We thought this was a great idea and the quality of our scarecrows have always been at a high standard and these recent ones have been no different.

“They are giving families an activity to do whilst in self isolation whilst showing their appreciation to our keyworker heroes!”
