Firefighters from across mid and south Powys tackled a "deliberate" grass fire near Builth Wells on Easter Monday.

Crews from Builth Wells, Rhayader, Llandrindod Wells and Brecon responded to the incident near the village of Garth at about 4.40pm on April 13.

Craig Thomas, Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service's Head of Operational Response for Powys Command, said on Twitter: "More great work by my teams but another deliberately lit fire. That's crews from four stations and an officer needlessly committed to a wild fire."

After extinguishing the fire, crews were then redeployed to another grass fire nearby.

"We made the tactical decision to leave [it to] burn overnight due to the terrain and darkness", Builth Wells Fire Station posted on Facebook. They added that there was "no risk posed to life or property".

It follows the launch of Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service's campaign to reduce deliberate fires.

With the dry and warm weather over the weekend and predicted for the forthcoming weeks, fire services across Wales are urging members of the public to act responsibly.

Mydrian Harries, from Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service, said: "While we all work together to support our communities during the COVID 19 epidemic by remaining at home, there is no place for deliberate fires in our society especially during the current situation.

"Deliberate grass fires reduce air quality as well as stretch valuable emergency services away from life saving incidents, so we appeal to everyone to help us to help them at this difficult time."
