Young Farmers Clubs from across Brecon and Radnorshire have united to support their communities amid the coronavirus crisis.

Members have been showing that it’s not all about farming but playing a crucial role delivering food, prescriptions and essential supplies to vulnerable and self-isolating people in towns and villages when they need it most.

James Nixon, Rhayader YFC chairman, said the crisis has “brought out the best in people”.

“I’m so proud of everyone. We have quite a few nurses and paramedics in the club as well. A lot of younger members are helping with shopping for vulnerable people.

“Each member has been helping out two people, which for a 45-member club is quite a lot. Everyone is being a huge help.”

“Young farmers is definitely more than farming. Now it’s time to give something back to the people who support our club.”

Rhayader YFC has produced a video for the loo roll challenge as a bit of fun to encourage people to keep busy during the coronavirus lockdown, which has become a social media hit.

“Life under lockdown can be quite lonely so involving as many people as possible was a must,” James said.

Meanwhile at Builth Wells YFC, members have been busy delivering leaflets in the surrounding rural areas to let people know that help is only a phone call away.

Caitlin Harley is the club secretary. She said it’s about giving back to the community who have supported the small club of 25 members with their concerts and events.

“It’s been really uplifting. We all have elderly relatives and neighbours, so we plan to give as much time as possible. We’re focussing a lot on them by getting their necessary items.

“It’s nice to help Cllr David Price who’s been working hard to support his constituents in the rural areas during the crisis.

“Everyone seems to be pulling together.”

Brecon and Radnorshire MP Fay Jones has praised the young farmers club members from across mid and south Powys for supporting their communities at a difficult time.

She said: “We have a fantastic spirit amongst our Young Farmers Clubs throughout Brecon and Radnorshire. Many of our members are helping their local communities with deliveries for people in isolation.”

“Wales YFC have received the invitation to take part in the toilet paper challenge. Members, former members and prospective members, have all had the call.”
