People living in and around Llandrindod Wells are paying some of the highest bills in the country for their utilities, data has shown.

Energy cost experts SaveonEnergy calculated that the Llandrindod Wells postcode area is the second highest-paying in the UK. This area also includes Builth Wells, Knighton, Rhayader, Llanwrtyd Wells, Llangammarch Wells, Presteigne and Brecon.

Dumfries and Galloway takes the title as the most expensive area, with residents paying an average of £2,416 annually.

In Llandrindod, the total average annual spend on utility bills per household is £1,311. Making up that total, is an average of £87.09 on lighting, £1,041.78 on heating and £182.22 on hot water bills.

Becoming more energy efficient is one of the many ways that households in the UK can save annually on their utility bills. Residents in Llandrindod Wells can save a potential £430 annually, according to SaveonEnergy, which is £242 more than those in Milton Keynes, highlighting a huge difference in the levels of energy efficiency.

To put it further into perspective how much households in Llandrindod could save, £430 divided by 12 is £35.83, meaning they could be saving this on average each month.

Surprisingly, London actually tops the list as the cheapest area in the UK for annual utility bills, at £775.

“Looking at the map below it is evident that steps could be taken by people living in the northern regions of the UK to become more energy efficient as there is a clear north/south divide highlighting the significant dependence residents have on such fundamental utilities.”

In response to its findings, SaveOnEnergy surveyed 2,197 Brits across the UK to see where their views currently stand regarding paying bills. 81 per cent of those surveyed are worried about bill increases during coronavirus, as already 33 per cent are struggling with paying their bills on time. Additionally, 67 per cent of those surveyed believe that their utility companies should be footing their bill during lockdown.

Almost half (48 per cent) of those surveyed stated they have looked for ways to decrease their energy bills whilst working from home during official lockdown guidelines. Linda Dodge, an expert at SaveonEnergy, has offered her top tips on ways people in the UK can save on their oncoming bills: switching to LED bulbs; ditching tumble dryers and buying an airer; and using a 24-hour plug timer.
