With events around the world having been cancelled because of coronavirus, one Powys man is feeling the loss of one annual musical extravaganza particularly keenly.

Lee Francis Waite used to work in the music industry, and helped select artists for the UK's Eurovision Song Contest entry.

And in the absence of this year's event, he has put up posters offering help to other people in Llandyssil who are disappointed at the loss of next month's showstopping musical contest.

"It's good in many ways, although it's sad, that Eurovision has been cancelled," Mr Waite said.

"No intelligent person would want to spread the disease with over 50 different entries and thousands of people in the audience."

He has been going to watch the competition, in person, nearly every year since 1972. He was supposed to be going this year's contest, in Rotterham in the Netherlands, but it was among the events to be cancelled because of the coronavirus pandemic.

He usually also puts up flags for all the competing countries in his garden, and hosts Eurovision parties in the years when he can't attend.

So to make up for the loss of the event, he has created some posters to go in his window for people in Llandyssil to see if they need some support during the Eurovision absence.

"If people are having withdrawal symptoms and they don't know what to do, they will have a number to ring," he said.

Mr Waite jokes that he'll be able to perform any Eurovision entry on request – before adding that if they do want a song, he might be better able to provide renditions of classics like Lulu's Boom Bang-A-Bang.
