THE cause of a major building blaze at the weekend is still unknown.

On Sunday, shorlty after 2pm crews from Welshpool, Montgomery, Llanfair Caereinion, Llanfyllin and Newtown attended a fire at a building in Severn Road, Welshpool.

A spokesman for Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service confirmed the blaze engulfed straw and agricultural machinery, but they do not yet know what caused it.

He said: "The building, measuring approximately 25 meters x 75 meters, was well alight and contained approximately 30 tonnes of straw, a telehandler and numerous agricultural machinery.

"Two breathing apparatus, two hose reel jets, two 45mm jets and a thermal imaging camera were used by firefighters during the incident.

"Crews were also involved in protecting buildings that were adjacent to the affected property."

He added: "Crews left the incident at 8.57pm and the incident was left open overnight.

"Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service re-inspected the incident at 8am the following morning, Monday (April 6), and the incident was closed at 8.33am.

"The cause of the fire is undetermined."

Social media users reported seeing the blaze from as far away as Leighton and Berriew.

"You can smell and see smoke from the town centre," one said.

"When you get closer to the Welshpool Town football and rugby pitches you can see flames above the buildings.

"There are strong winds, which I'd imagine aren't helping. There's about five or six fire engines at the scene."
