FIVE people were arrested after reports of a burglary, and were also given fixed penalties for flouting coronavirus lockdown rules.

The burglary incident, which is understood to have taken place at the Spar in Llanfair Caereinion, happened overnight, Friday to Saturday morning.

A Newtown Roads Policing Unit spokesman said: "Commercial burglary reported in Montgomeryshire. Vehicle left the scene, but located by 34/609.

"5 arrested and in custody. Bedded down for CID, all 5 given fixed penalties under COVID 19 non essential journeys. #StayAtHome #COVID19."

It is now a criminal offence to flout the public health guidance on social distancing to prevent the spread of coronavirus

The regulations give officers the power to enforce social distancing among the public.

Police can issue penalty notices of £60, reduced to £30 if paid within 28 days, if they believe there has been an offence.

The regulations will be reviewed at least every 21 days to ensure they are still necessary.
