Five more coronavirus cases have been detected in Powys as the outbreak continues to spiral across Wales.

The latest cases bring the county's overall tally to 34, and mean that the overall number in Powys has risen by 50 per cent over the last two days.

And while the county has previously been reporting one or two cases per day, today is the second successive day where the number has been higher than that – yesterday there were seven new cases confirmed.

Across Wales, 19 people have been reported to have died from Covid-19, while 284 more cases have been found over the last 24 hours.

Dr Robin Howe, Incident Director for the Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak response at Public Health Wales, said: “19 further deaths have been reported to us of people who had tested positive for Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19), taking the number of deaths in Wales to 117.

“We offer our condolences to families and friends affected, and we ask those reporting on the situation to respect patient confidentiality."

The latest cases mean that Wales has hit two unwanted milestones today, with more than 100 people having died and more than 2,000 confirmed to have contracted coronavirus.

The numbers are also considered to be conservative, not least in Powys, because the amount of people being tested for the disease is such a small proportion of the overall population.

With people who think they may be experiencing symptoms being asked to stay at home, without widespread testing, the true number of cases both across Powys and in Wales as a whole is likely to be far higher than the official figures.

Public Health Wales has not been releasing details of where the cases in Powys are.
