A spate of scam telephone calls have been targeting residents in mid Powys.

Dyfed-Powys Police has issued a fresh warning about automated telephone scams following reports in the Llandrindod Wells, Rhayader and Builth Wells areas.

Several people have received unsolicited calls from a well-spoken male voice, claiming to work for HMRC.

The recorded message goes on to mention supposed outstanding payments and warns of a possible warrant for arrest, before telling the householder to press 1 to speak to an operator.

Police have issued the following tips to keep people safe from phone fraud:

  • Remember it is OK not to speak with cold callers – if you feel something is wrong just put the phone down
  • Telephone numbers and text messages can easily be spoofed. You should never trust the number you see on your telephone’s display
  • Do not enter into conversation with someone you do not know, provide them with any personal details or send them any money

Anyone who is concerned is urged to contact police on 101, or Action Fraud on 0300 123 2040.
