Rumours of a fatal stabbing in Newtown are not true, say police.
Dyfed-Powys Police believe it to be a misunderstanding related to the sudden death of an elderly man in the town centre last weekend.
A force spokesperson said: "We are aware of speculation in Newtown relating to the rumoured fatal stabbing of a man in the town in the past week. We can reassure the public that there has been no such incident in Newtown."
An 82-year-old man was found with a head injury by members of the public at St Mary's Close on Sunday evening (February 16).
Paramedics attended and confirmed that the man had a head injury consistent with him having fallen. Sadly, he was pronounced dead in the ambulance.
Police said: "Officers conducted inquiries on behalf of the Coroner, and there are not believed to be suspicious circumstances."
