A Machynlleth town councillor has denied a £1.80 shoplifting charge at crown court and will go to trial.

Myfanwy Noella Elliot, 66, of Bryn-y-Gog, Machynlleth, appeared in the dock at Mold Crown Court this morning (Friday, February 7).

She was charged with stealing a packet of Panadol Advance Tablets to the value of £1.80 from the Co-operative store in Machynlleth on October 18, 2019.

This offence would have automatically stayed within magistrates' court, however Elliott opted for the case to go to crown when she appeared at Welshpool Magistrates' Court a month ago.

Elliot was rebailed pending a trial, which may go into a second day, at Caernarfon Crown Court on Wednesday, March 4.

Judge Rhys Rowlands said that he could not remember how long ago it was since he had seen such a case in the crown court.

He adjourned the case for trial and told Elliott that if she did not turn up for her trial then it would continue in her absence and the jury would not hear her side of the story.
