Three people have been taken to hospital after they were involved in a serious head-on crash involving two cars near Welshpool.

Fire crews from Welshpool rescued a man who was "medically trapped" inside a Vauxhall Corsa.

A woman passenger and another male driver were able to release themselves from the cars before emergency services arrived at the scene.

Their injuries are "not believed to be life threatening," a Dyfed-Powys Police spokeswoman said.

The collision happened shortly after 11pm on Tuesday, January 14, on the A483 between The Horseshoes Inn and Wernllwyd Farm.

West Midlands Ambulance Service, Welsh Ambulance Service, Dyfed-Powys Police, Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service and the Montgomeryshire Emergency Doctors attended the incident.

A firefighter said on Twitter: "A difficult job due to number of casualties but good working between all agencies."

The road was closed in both directions for three hours and re-opened at 2.05am.

A Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said : "On Tuesday, January 14, at 11.15pm, crews from Welshpool attended a road traffic collision, involving two vehicles, on the A483 near Berriew, Welshpool.

"A male casualty was medically trapped within a vehicle and released by firefighters using e-draulic equipment.

"One female casualty and another male casualty were released from the vehicles prior to the arrival of the Fire Service. All three casualties were taken to hospital by the Ambulance Service.

"Firefighters administered oxygen therapy to two casualties at the incident.

"The Fire Service left the incident at 01:11am. "
