People had to be evacuated from a rugby clubhouse in the centre of Builth Wells on Saturday evening following an “explosion” at the property.

Fire crews from Builth Wells and Llandrindod Wells found a carbon dioxide cylinder had exploded at Builth Wells Rugby Clubhouse on Market Street at around 10.15pm.

No-one was reported hurt during the incident.

A Llandrindod Wells firefighter said crews arrived to “no sign of fire” but a “catastrophic failure” of the carbon dioxide cylinder in the cellar.

The explosion caused damage to the cellar and one window on the ground floor of the property, the Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service said.

A second cylinder was found leaking which firefighters isolated along with the gas and electricity supply. A thermal camera was used by fire crews during the incident.

Builth Wells Rugby Clubhouse staff took to social media to thank Simon ‘Jungle’ John, Linda Bryce from the Barley Mow pub and the Fire Service for their help during the incident on Saturday night.

“We had a gas explosion last night in the cellar and we’re just writing to thank everyone for their help and support in getting everyone out safe and sound,” they said.

“We’re thanking our lucky stars that nobody was hurt, as it could have been a lot worse than what it was!”

A Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said: “On Saturday, January 11, at 10.14pm, crews from Builth Wells and Llandrindod Wells were called to an incident in Market Street, Builth Wells, following a report of an explosion at a property that was used as a public house.
