A MUSIC evening held at Oswestry Golf Club has helped to raise more than £1,400 for two cancer charities.

Organised by Maggie Mason and Janet Passey, the event raised a total of £1,408.20 which was split between Macmillan Cancer Care and the Mick Knighton Research Fund.

Live music was performed by the Ben Holder Trio with popular jazz, classical and alternative music.

Maggie said she was overwhelmed by the generosity and support shown by those who attended the event.

She said: “It was very well supported, and people were very generous. The musicians were fantastic and really vibrant.

“I find it really humbling that people are so kind; it’s tough nowadays, but people never fail to sponsor, donate or help out.

“We’re very grateful for that, it’s really well-appreciated by us.

“We would also like to thank Gordon Burton, Peter Starbuck and Milton Francis who sponsored the room for us.”

The pair presented the cheque to the chairman of Oswestry’s Macmillan branch – Margery James MBE.

Margery said: “I would like to give a huge thanks to the ladies who organised the event.”

“We always appreciate donations, because we’re getting called upon more and more for support nowadays.

“It’s so difficult – 43 years ago, £10 would do a lot, but today it doesn’t go as far, so we need to be raising more and more money every year.

“People are very generous today, and there are such a lot of charities people donate to.”
