CABINET members are expected to vote through a proposal that will see more Powys County Council (PCC) services, and communication with the public being done digitally.

On Wednesday morning, November 27, the “Digital Powys Strategy” will go before the cabinet and  portfolio holder for corporate governance and engagement, Cllr Graham Breeze (Independent – Welshpool Llanerchyddol) will explain the strategy and why it’s needed.

The vision is: “Embracing digital technologies to improve our customers’ experience.”

But according to the report, there is still a question on how to finance the strategy?

And the decision could also be taken before a business plan to justify the strategy is finished.

The report says: “It is widely recognised that public services need to transform radically to keep pace with the digital evolution and customer expectations as well as finding new ways of adding value.

“With reduced funding and greater demand for services we need to be innovative in the solutions we design for the future, harnessing the power of the data revolution and digital technology.

“Technology can enhance the lives of our residents, including the most vulnerable, and we need to embrace the transformation that can bring.”

According to the report: “The Digital Powys Transformation Programme will provide the vehicle required to embrace digital throughout the organisation and transform our relationships with or residents, communities and businesses whilst delivering long term efficiencies.”

The report adds: “Current short term funding to implement the digital strategy is being sought from external sources and within current service budgets.

“A full business case and costed plans outlining the funding requirement and benefits, financial or otherwise, is being developed for future consideration.”

The cabinet has three options to consider for the strategy and are expected to vote through Option Three.

Option Three says: “A digital strategy that is a critical element of our transformation programme and supports the delivery of our ambitious Vision 2025 Corporate Improvement Plan.”

The benefits of the strategy according to the report, will include:

Customer interaction with the council will become quicker and easier leading to improved customer satisfaction.

Technology will contribute to supporting people to live independently in their communities.

An improved relationship with partners to safeguard our most vulnerable people.

Business communities will be supported to thrive in the digital age.

Improved joined services through shared information and technology.

Reduced costs to focus  PCC’s limited resources on providing services that improve well being.

Information will be safe and secure and used appropriately.
