A WREXHAM County Borough Councillor for Chirk has given his backing to the idea of having youth councillors in the town.

Councillor Terry Evans believes it would help to build a stronger connection between the council and younger people in the community to see what help and support they need.

The idea was brought up at last month’s council meeting, with discussions looking at whether it would be a useful move for the area.

Cllr Evans said he would like to show his support for the idea.

“I think it’s a wonderful idea,” he said. “It’s something I would fully support and I definitely see it as being a step in the right direction.

“We sometimes seem to be a bit detached from what young people are doing and how they feel.

“If we are able to connect better with them as a council, we will have a better chance at offering them the support they need.”

He continued to say he believes Chirk can learn from other councils which have already introduced youth councillors.

He said: “The council in Wrexham currently has a youth council and as far as I’m aware it seems to work really well.

“I think most councils either currently have youth councillors involved or are looking to get them involved.

“It’s something which can help to give youngsters encouragement and something they can be proud of doing.”It’s a good experience for them too.”
