LABOUR metro mayors Andy Burnham and Steve Rotheram will visit Wrexham today to discuss Welsh Labour’s ambitious plans to improve rail links with the North West of England.

Welsh Labour Minister for Economy and Transport, Ken Skates will meet the mayors at Wrexham General Station, where they will outline how the Welsh Labour Government’s investment in the transport network could be boosted by a UK Labour Government.

They will be joined by local Welsh Labour candidate for Wrexham, Mary Wimbury.

The Welsh Labour Government is developing a high-quality, low carbon and integrated transport system across North Wales and plans to radically extend this work if a Labour Government is elected on December 12.

Speaking ahead of the visit, Welsh Labour Minister for Economy and Transport, Ken Skates, said: “The Welsh Labour Government is delivering ambitious improvements to rail, bus and road networks across North Wales.

“A crucial part of this work is ensuring our transport networks are fully joined up with the North West of England.

“Having a UK Labour Government in Westminster would allow us to fully link these plans and work with colleagues from the North of England to deliver the investment our communities need and deserve.”

The Welsh Labour Government is currently delivering a new £5bn Wales and Borders rail service that will see more services and additional capacity across the entire Welsh network.

As part of these plans, all stations in North Wales will be powered by 100 per cent renewable energy, half-price fares will be extended to 16 to 18-year-olds and customers will see the benefit of new Smart Ticketing plans.

The far-reaching investment will also deliver two new community rail partnerships on the North Wales line and the Crewe to Hereford line. These will be supported by the recruitment of two new community and stakeholder managers and 13 community and customer ambassadors.
