A HORTICULTURAL business has submitted plans to Powys County Council (PCC) to build a cafe.

King’s Nurseries at Garthmyl, near Lakeside Golf Club, says that the 271 square metre cafe could create up to to three jobs, one full time and two part time.

Their agent, Frederick Carter, said in the Design and Access Statement (DAS): “Kings Nurseries opened on the site to the general public in 2008, selling bedding plants and horticultural supplies.

“Due to the growth of the business since 2017 visitor numbers to the site has grown.

“The site is relatively isolated with no footpath to the centre of Garthmyl.

“The only safe option is to travel by car to eat or drink, increasing vehicular movements back and forth.

“The proposal is for a cafe unit on the site to be open during the centres operating hours to provide refreshments for visitors.”

Mr Carter continued: “The proposal is on an open patch of grassed land to the east of the nursery, an ecology report will be submitted to show the proposal is of minimum impact.”

But the site is in a flood zone, near Llifior Brook, and the cafe will be in an area with potential to flood.

Because of this, the DAS says that the cafe will be raised up and measures will be put in place to deal with the volume of water displaced by the development.

Mr Carter adds: “The proposals will provide employment to the area, the works will be carried out using local labour and materials sourced locally.

“The business has grown substantially over the short period since moving to the site, this additional growth will support the existing business allowing for increased development and diversity to the site with the potential to grow the local economy my providing additional employment for the area.”
