FIVE friends are about to embark on a 24-hour walking challenge to pay homage to the 115 men from the Llanidloes area who died during the First World War.
Paul Avery, Paul Jones, Wendy Abel, John Dunkley and Stephen Mills will visit the places where the men lived and worked during a 45-mile walk on Friday, October 11.
They will set off at 11am at the Cenotaph and return to Llanidloes on Saturday morning to mark the launch of the 2019 Poppy Appeal. The Ladies Branch of the Royal British Legion will be selling 115 crosses of remembrance to be placed at the Cenotaph.
The event also marks the publication of ‘Llanidloes and District in the Great War’ by local historians Nia Griffiths and Nick Venti. The book, which took eight years to complete, will be available in November.
