THE eyes of the world turn to Mid Wales this weekend as the Wales Rally GB rolls into the region.

The 12th round of the World Rally Championship (WRC) began in Liverpool on Thursday before crossing the border and the border for Friday night action in Aberhirnant forest.

The rally arrives in its ancestral Mid Wales home on Saturday with action at the Dyfi, Myherin, Sweet Lamb and Hafren stages and a midday restart in Newtown before the 200 mile event concludes in Llandudno on Sunday.

Thousands of rally fans from across the country are expected to descend on the region, providing a tourism and trade boost.

Dolgellau’s Elfyn Evans is joined by co-driver Scott Martin in competing for M-Sport Ford while Newtown co-driver Phil Mills teams up with Petter Solberg as the 2003 WRC champions bid to roll back the years in a Volskwagen Polo R5.

Also in action is Aberdyfi’s Tom Cave and co-driver Dale Furniss from Llanfyllin with the duo in action in a Hyundai R5.
