MYSTERY surrounds the alleged suspension of Welshpool Town Clerk Robert Robinson.

The County Times has been told that Mr Robinson was suspended on Saturday, August 24.

When Mr Robinson was contacted, he said an investigation was taking place and that he would not comment or get involved. “Staff matters are private and not matters for the press,” he said.

Inquiries to the town council have been rebuffed and reporters have been told the only person they can talk to is the mayor.

Welshpool Mayor, Steve Kaye, refused to allay any rumours as to whether Mr Robinson had been suspended and merely said: “I have no comment to make at this time”.

It is understood that Welshpool Town Council held a meeting on Monday night to discuss the matter.

One councillor contacted, Phil Pritchard, who sits on the town and county council, said that it was a “confidential matter” and that he has “no comment whatsoever.”

At the town council’s last full meeting, on Wednesday, August 28, a solicitor filled in for Mr Robinson.

Mr Robinson has been the town clerk of Welshpool Town Council since July 2006, when he took over the role from Ken Fletcher.

In September 2018, it was announced that Robert Robinson would reduce his commitment to the role, and would likely retire in 2020 or 2021.
