Changes to Welshpool's one-way system are set to open this weekend, as soon as midnight hits in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Speaking at Welshpool Town Council full meeting on Wednesday, the mayor, Steve Kaye, said that two-way traffic would start on Brook Street on midnight on Saturday, and that the changes will be monitored throughout Sunday.

Following a meeting on Friday, August 30, between officers, county and town councillors, it was also confirmed that delays can be expected from 6pm on Saturday for additional white lining to take place.

The new zebra crossing on Broad Street will also become operational by midnight on Saturday though work in Church Street with the junction of Puzzle Square will not be completed until Monday.

It was also confirmed that work to take out the traffic island at the Mill Lane junction outside The Westwood Park Hotel will take place on Wednesday and Thursday evenings.

Large volumes of holiday traffic are again causing problems in the town today with the contractors working hard to achieve the Saturday night deadline.

The work was initially expected to take between six to eight weeks, and the estimate was upped to 10 just before work started. Now, it’s 17 weeks in since work began back on April 29.

The town’s main street is being reduced to a single lane, a zebra crossing is being built near the town hall and Brook Street and Union Street are returning to two-way.

A consultation document by the Welsh Government said the move was designed to improve pedestrian safety as well as curbing inappropriate driver behaviour on Broad Street.
