An Oswestry couple have told of their shock at being caught in a terrifying landslide in Scotland.

Kirsty Brooke was on holiday with her partner Emily Jervis in Glengyle, when the landslide struck destroying holiday cottages, including the one the pair where staying in with their Irish Setter, Harry.

Kirsty said the pair, who live in College Road, were on the verge of heading out for a final walk of the day before being forced back indoors by the oncoming landslide.

And she admitted that the pair will be having second thoughts about heading north of the border once again.

“That was the first time up in Scotland,” said Kirsty. “I think we’re both kind of thinking that we wouldn’t go back – it’s definitely made us think about whether we would go there again.

"It’s fair to say that we won’t be going back up for now.

“Before it happened, it had rained so hard, but I said to Emily that we should take Harry – who was so brave throughout – for a walk, and then get home and get comfy for the night.

“Emily went to get her wellington boots, I went out and then back into the cottage and heard the noise. I managed to get back in and shut the patio door.

“The first wave of the landslide came down with a huge wave of rainwater and it moved the car about 10 metres.

“The next wave of water came down and it was joined by loads of debris, and it smashed into the car, moving it another 20 metres.”

Among the panic of the landslide itself came the rising fear that the pair would be trapped in the house during the landslide after not being able to find a front door key.

Kirsty added: “We couldn’t find the key to get out of the front door. The neighbours of the cottages, one of them had been through this before, they were telling us we had to get out.

“We heard the back bedroom window smash through, but I remembered I was able to get the patio door open with the same code, so we got out.

“We were both very shaken up but we’re just very tired, and I can’t help thinking it could’ve been worse.”
