DUMPING rubbish outside a household waste recycling centre has cost a Brecon resident £200 after they were fined by Powys County Council.

The council’s Waste Awareness and Enforcement Team issued the fine after the individual was caught on CCTV fly-tipping two bags of rubbish in a car park next to Brecon’s household waste recycling centre on the Ffrwgrech Industrial Estate on Thursday, June 27.

The suspect was traced from the vehicle registration plate using the DVLA database by enforcement officers. Following an investigation, the resident received a £400 fine for depositing controlled waste on land, breaching Section 33 of the Environmental Protection Act 1990.

The suspect accepted the fine and paid £200 as an early repayment option is available if it is paid within 10 days.

Cllr Phyl Davies, Cabinet Member Highways, Recycling and Assets, said: “We want to make Powys a welcoming place for our residents and visitors and this starts by having a clean environment.

“The majority of the public and businesses already recycle and dispose of their waste in the correct way. However, there are those who blight our communities with their selfish actions by fly-tipping their waste.

“We need to reinforce the message that fly-tipping is a criminal offence that harms the environment and costs taxpayers’ money when it has to be cleared up. We will clamp down on those who dispose of their waste illegal by stepping up our enforcement activities.

“We hope this will act as a warning to show that we will investigate this anti-social behaviour and take the appropriate enforcement action.”
