Just four days before his driving ban came to an end, a Trewern motorcyclist tried to flee from police by driving over a roundabout and along a footpath; and he’s now been disqualified for a further 12 months.

Kieran Turner, 23, of Brook Cottages, Trewern, Welshpool, was sentenced for three charges on Tuesday: failing to stop for police, driving whilst disqualified, and having no insurance.

Helen Tench, prosecuting, told Welshpool Magistrates’ Court that on June 29, at 9.30pm, police saw a motorcycle going “at speed” and followed it.

The officers then put on their lights and sirens to pull the defendant over, but he did not stop. Ms Tench said that the officers initially thought he could not hear the sirens as he was wearing a helmet. However, he then drove along a pedestrian path, magistrates heard.

The court also heard that Turner went “straight over” the mini roundabout by the Tesco supermarket.

Robert Hanratty, defending, said: “It was only four days before he would lose his driving ban. He didn’t want to stop.”

Mr Hanratty said that Turner had let himself down, that he shouldn’t have done it and that it was a “one off”.

Probation told the court that Turner had bought the bike to commute to work in Four Crosses and that he needed the wages.

As well as getting a 12-month disqualification, magistrates also gave Turner a community order of the same length; consisting of 120 unpaid work hours and 10 rehabilitation activity requirement days. He was also told to pay costs of £175.
