A CONSULTATION has begun on the potential removal of phone boxes.

BT is posting notices inside some phone boxes across Powys with a 42 day consultation period starting from July 11.

If no one objects the box will be removed by BT which is advising contacting Powys County Council’s planning department with your views. Residents in Pennant, Llanbrynmair saved their box during a previous consultation in 2016 by objecting and resident Sue Beacher says they hope to be successful again this time.

She said: “This phone box needs to stay. In Pennant there is no or patchy mobile signal, not all mobile network providers supply a service. Many walkers, cyclists and tourists visit and stay in the area and may need to contact a GP, dentist or emergency service.

“The area is served by overhead cables, how do you report a faulty landline without a mobile phone? The box has been in the rural street scene since the 1930s and is part of our heritage and contributes to the areas visual appeal.”
