Last week there will be a pretty common theme of conversation amongst our farming community - are you going to the show or have you been to the show?

It was Royal Welsh Show week and it was a special one at that - the 100th show! We are proud to be a part of the biggest agricultural show in Europe, which showcases our industry so well and brings ‘Farming Matters’ to everyone's attention - in fact the FUW has had an official presence at the show for more than 60 years!

I hope that those of you who were showing your livestock did as well in the showring as you expected to and had a fantastic time doing so!

For us at the FUW it is always good to catch up with members in the pavilion and enjoy the wide and varied #FarmingMatters chats over a cup of tea.

But it’s not just about drinking tea - we have also been busy in our many meetings highlighting why our industry is so important and why funding for agriculture needs to be sorted out as a matter of urgency.

You may ask yourself what your union is doing for you when it comes to Brexit and future policies, so let me assure you that our officials and staff are working hard in the background making sure that your voices are being heard.

We have also been tackling other important issues such as the effect bovine TB breakdowns have on mental health, we have examined the difference between re-wilding and conservation and had productive discussions on future farming policies for Wales.

In addition to the important subjects discussed at the seminars, FUW officials have met with ministers and politicians, representatives of farming and industry bodies and companies, banks and many others to discuss farming matters.

Not least amongst these issues were the collapse in beef prices caused by cheap imports and stockpiling ahead of the original Brexit date, and the threat of a hard Brexit for our industry, in particular the sheep industry.

Best of luck to all of you for the remainder of the show season. We certainly look forward to seeing you at the upcoming local shows!
