A RETIRED Wrexham man hung himself after dedicating most of his life to caring for his disabled sister, an inquest has heard.

Maelor Alun Price, 71, of Peter Street, Rhos, had been the sole carer of his sister Gaynor (74) - who was born with spina bifida - after the death of their parents.

John Gittins, coroner for North Wales (East and Central) told the hearing at Wrexham Guildhall that Mr Price was "a saint" who had no social life due to the fact his sister required 24 hour care and was not able to communicate.

On the morning of March 5 this year, Kelly Thomas, who had provided regular additional care to Gaynor for the last four years, arrived at the home and found it unusual to see the blinds were still closed and an upstairs window was open. After calling her head office for advice, Ms Thomas entered the property using a key from a key safe, and found a note on the kitchen table.

Police were called and found Mr Price, with another note providing instructions on which funeral directors to use in the event of his death.

In reaching a conclusion of suicide, Mr Gittins explained how Mr Price, a retired former employee of Manweb and British Gas, had known what time the carer would be visiting the house and said it was clear it was a deliberate act.

He said: "It is very clear that this gentleman, for pretty much the entirety of his life, had devoted himself to looking after his sister, in very sad circumstances, without complaint, or reward or thanks."
