A BUCKLEY woman who had a history of mental illness intentionally took her own life, an inquest has heard.

Susan O’Connor, 56, was found in the garden of her Eglwys Close home by her daughter Claire, on February 12, having taken an overdose.

John Gittins, coroner for North Wales (East and Central) told the inquest at Wrexham Guildhall Mrs O’Connor had suffered from a history of mental illness.

He said on the day of her death, Mrs O’Connor had tried to get help by contacting the mental health services, but despite requesting a call back no return call was made and hours later, she was found dead. An investigation carried out by the mental health services found the telephone call was not returned and how the timing of a scheduled appointment for Mrs O’Connor had fallen outside of the guidelines of the health board. He also acknowledged an issue raised by Mrs O’Connor’s family, in terms of the difficulty they had in contacting someone from the correct department.

He said: “I completely agree that there is clearly an issue with family members trying to contact mental health services. I shall be writing to them to seek answers about the issues surrounding this case.

“It is clear that she wanted help and we need to do all we can to help people when they need it.”

Mr Gittins reached a conclusion of suicide.
