She is one of the most famous faces on television for a generation of youngsters, and now former Blue Peter presenter Konnie Huq is coming to Oswestry.

She will be bring her book Cookie and the Most Annoying Boy in the World to the Lion Quays Hotel on Tuesday, August 6 – organised by Oswestry's Booka Bookshop – to launch the book ahead of its publication two days later.

There will be live draw-alongs, brain-busting quizzes and games galore at what promises to be a celebratory event – one that Konnie is very much looking forward to being at.

Being able to take what she has created, having written the words and illustrated it herself, Konnie believes getting out to see youngsters all over the country will help them develop into better people.

"I'm really looking froward to coming to Oswestry, definitely," said Konnie. "I love meeting new people, which is why I loved my Blue Peter years so much.

"You can only expand your understanding of life by getting out there, travelling and meeting people.

"It's great to meet people – I did a recent mini-tour in Scotland and they were delighted that we had gone up to see them and not had to go down to London.

"They said they had been invited to things but the thing about London is that it's so far away and it's great to get out and about with the book.

"It's really important to come to places like Oswestry and meet the people who will be hopefully inspired by the book.

"We live in a society where's still a thirst to conform to wear have the right clothes or phone, and people are worrying more and more but all you really want is happiness.

"Any level of competitiveness about having the best things will never be fulfilled because there's always going to be someone trendier.

"Happiness comes from not just helping yourself but helping others – people don't realise that.

"If people can get that from giving back to society and helping others, then we'd be in a win-win situation.

"If we teach those values to kids then they take them through life, and if they think that giving back to society I what they want to do then the world will be a better place."

Konnie describes the book as a cross between 'Bridget Jones and Wimpy Kid' with Cookie who is always getting into scrapes but is creative, especially in her thinking.

She added: "I've done lots of cartoons and comic strips throughout to show off her head thoughts, but she's also quite scientific, practical and it's aimed at throwing conventional stereotypes on their head.

"My parents came from Bangladesh in the 1960s and gave me a good education, from a background of becoming an accountant or an engineer.

"But we live in a time now where you're revered for being a pop star or being on reality TV.

"I went into the media but I've always had a science background.

"I feel I've managed to blend the arts and the sciences and hopefully the book will call up about being knowledgeable and clever.

"That is something worth praising as it seems these days it's all about reality TV.

"The main character is from an ethnic minority background but that is secondary because she's funny and frenetic in everyday life.

"Everyone is a minority that makes up this amazing majority and you can be a minority even if you have curly hair or like trainspotting, for example."

Tickets cost £15 for one child and one adult, including a signed hardback copy and £5 for an additional child/adult.
