Fourth generation sheep farmer, Wynne Jerman, and his family were recognised by M&S at this year’s Royal Welsh Show with a special award to celebrate producers of Welsh lamb.

The family picked up the Welsh Lamb Producer of the Year 2019 at the official M&S Select Farm Awards presentation on the M&S stand during this year’s Royal Welsh show, a ceremony that recognised outstanding farmers and growers across the M&S supply base in England and Wales.

The Jerman family run around 1,250 breeding sheep on approximately 650 acres at Llanidloes. Wynne is the fourth generation to farm the same land, which has been in the family for over 100 years. His three sons and daughter are now involved in the business too.

The farm is focussed on producing grass-fed lamb, more recently concentrating on using high-sugar grasses to produce a quality lamb on a more sustainable system. The farm also has beef cattle and mix-grazes the cattle with the sheep, letting the beef eat the rough grasses and leaving only the nice, fine grass for the sheep.

Steve McLean, head of agriculture and fisheries at M&S, said: “The provenance of the fresh meat we sell is very important to M&S customers. Welsh lamb is such an important part of Welsh agriculture that we felt it was fitting to recognise our Welsh lamb suppliers at the Royal Welsh Show and the Jerman family are a perfect example of the high-quality suppliers we are proud to work with.”

As a regional winner in the M&S Select Farm Awards, the Jerman family were presented with a certificate and M&S gift vouchers on the M&S stand during this year’s Royal Welsh Show.
