CONSERVATIVES in Montgomeryshire have elected the candidate they hope will succeed MP Glyn Davies at the next General Election.

Craig Williams, who was born in Welshpool and now lives in Llanfair Caereinion, was selected at a special meeting of the local Conservative party which was held on Saturday.

The selection of a prospective MP follows the announcement by Montgomeryshire MP Glyn Davies not to stand for re-election at the next General Election due in 2022.

Glyn has represented Montgomeryshire for the last nine years.

Craig Williams said: "I'd like to thank the members and officers of the Montgomeryshire Conservatives. I am passionate about Montgomeryshire.

"It is my home, where I grew up and where my wife and I are raising our children.

"If the people of Montgomeryshire put their faith in me I will do all I can to be a strong voice for Montgomeryshire in Westminster."

MP Glyn Davies said: "Craig is a fantastic community champion, who understands the needs of local people and the specific issues that we face here in rural Mid Wales.

"I have no doubt that Craig will follow in my footsteps and be a strong voice for Montgomeryshire at Westminster."

Montgomeryshire Assembly Member Russell George said: "It has been a great pleasure to work alongside for the best part of a decade, working together to promote and protect Montgomeryshire's interests in Westminster and Cardiff Bay.

"Craig understands local concerns and is campaigning on the issues that matter to the people of Mid Wales."
