The Royal Welsh Agricultural Society has decided that all horses attending this year's Royal Welsh Show must be "properly vaccinated".

The announcement follows an outbreak of confirmed cases of Equine Flu in Wales. Caernarfon Show, which was due to take place last weekend, was cancelled after a number of exhibitors pulled out.

The Royal Welsh Agricultural Society (RWAS) said that they made the decision following an assessment of the latest information and having taken professional advice regarding Equine Flu.

A spokeswoman said: "The Royal Welsh Agricultural Society has today (Tuesday, July 9) considered a range of options, including cancellation of the horse section, following our initial decision to strongly recommend vaccination.

"Putting the welfare of horses first, within this fast changing picture, the Society has decided that all equines attending this year’s Royal Welsh Show must be properly vaccinated.

"The Society is communicating this decision to all exhibitors and is conscious of the impact this difficult decision may cause."

RWAS said it will continue to work with veterinary professionals, the Chief Veterinary Officer for Wales and exhibitors to minimise the spread of animal disease.

The 100th Royal Welsh Show will be held from Monday, July 22, to Thursday, July 25.
