A MAN from Montgomery who knocked a schoolboy unconscious during late night violence in the centre of Aberystwyth has been jailed.

His victim suffered a head injury that caused bleeding to his brain.

Kirk Jones, 28, admitted inflicting grievous bodily harm and was jailed for eight months.

Swansea crown court heard how police saw Jones, of Montgomery, arguing with another man. Officers separated them and told them to calm down.

A short while later Jones was filmed by CCTV cameras in Pier Street.

He approached a disturbance outside a kebab shop and first slapped the bonnet of a taxi before pursuing the boy across the street and delivering "a heavy blow" to his face.

He fell backwards and "witnesses heard a very disturbing crack" as his head hit the pavement.

The boy was taken to Bronglais Hospital where doctors kept him in for observation because of the brain injury.

Ian Wright, the barrister representing Jones, said he had already been recalled to prison to serve the rest of a sentence imposed for earlier offending.

He now expected to lose his business, added Mr Wright.

Judge Peter Heywood said the assault had affected the victim at a crucial time in his education.
