Five gardens in Berriew village, a hillside garden at Llanfyllin and a garden surrounded by 23 acres filled with wildlife at Aberangell are all open for the National Garden Scheme this weekend.

Bachie Uchaf in Bachie Road, Llanfyllin, SY22 5NF, is a hillside garden filled with vibrant colour created by semi-retired farmer Glyn and his wife Glenys. A stream cascades from the top of the garden and disappears into an underground channel, another stream tumbles into a pond and more water burbles through slate at the side of a patio. The garden is planted with specimen trees and shrubs surrounding lawns. Wonderful views of the surrounding countryside can be enjoyed from the many seating areas around the garden. Open on both Saturday, June 29, and Sunday, June 30, from 1.30 until 5pm. Admission is £4.50 for adults, children free. Well-behaved dogs on leads are welcome.

There is a lot going on at Esgair Angell from 11am until 5pm on Sunday, June 30. On the edge of Snowdonia National Park, the two-acre garden is surrounded by 23 acres for wildlife and bounded by the river Angell. Here you will find a trout lake with an abundance of plant and animal life and a second pond with an otter holt. You can enjoy spectacular views from a circular walk through fields. During the day there will be a wood turning demonstration and a birds of prey display as well as live poetry. Other guests include Nature Quest Optics who specialise in wildlife photography, Green Goat Street Food and Cuan Wildlife Rescue. Esgair Angell is midway between Dogellau and Machnylleth at Aberangell (SY20 9QJ). Admission is £4.50 for adults, children free. Dogs on leads are welcome.

And then Berriew Village Gardens, five of them, are all open on Sunday, June 30, from midday until 5pm. Combined admission is £6 for adults, children free. There will be tea and cakes in the Old School and plants for sale and a children’s treasure hunt at The White Cottage. Read what Carolle Doyle has to say about the gardens in Leisure Times – Gardening.

There are also gardens which will open by arrangement providing visitors with an exclusive opportunity to explore wonderful gardens set in stunning locations, all you need to do is contact the owner and arrange a time to suit you.

Founded in 1927, the National Garden Scheme gives visitors unique access to over 3,500 exceptional private gardens in England and Wales, and raises impressive amounts of money for nursing and health charities through admissions, teas and cake. Thanks to the generosity of garden owners, volunteers and visitors we have donated a total of £58 million to nursing and health charities, and made donations of £3.1 million in 2018.
