A woman who crashed her car in Llansantffraid has been given a driving ban for being over double the drink-drive limit, a court heard.

The crash took place on the lane between Llansantffraid and Llanyblodwell on June 9, but her solicitor said she only crashed because of a “large hole on the road”, magistrates heard.

Holly Mary-Jane Williams, 32, of Catsbritch Lane, Waters Upton, Telford, pleaded guilty to the drink driving offence at Welshpool Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday.

Ceri Ellis Jones, prosecuting, said that it was a “straight forward matter”. Police were called to a road traffic collision at 12.45pm on June 9, the court heard.

Williams was found in the car and unhurt, Mrs Ellis-Jones said.

She was then taken to the police station where she failed tests and was found to have 79 micrograms of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath. The limit is 35 micrograms.

Robert Hanratty, defending Williams, said: “The young lady does not usually drink to excess.”

The court heard that as she was driving her vehicle there was a “large hole on the road” which caused her to “lose control of her vehicle”.

Mr Hanratty said it was bigger than a pothole; “It was a significant hole”.

Chair of the bench, Nick Powell, said: “We feel that a 20-month driving ban is inevitable in this case”.

She was also fined £250, ordered to pay court costs of £85 and victim surcharge of £30 – an overall total of £365.
