THE closing of an Oswestry bakery has been described as the "end of an era" by its long serving manager.

Carolines Bakery, based in Red Square, will open its doors for the last time this weekend after more than 40 years of business.

Jean Meredith has worked as manager of the shop for the last 23 years, but will work her last shift at the bakery on Saturday.

Jean added that the closure is down to a move away from old-fashioned day-to-day shops in order to concentrate on wholesale market.

"I'm sad to go, I've really enjoyed working here," said Jean. "It's like a home from home.

"I just came through when my children were starting school. It was a part-time job, but 23 year later here we are!

"I have just over 18 months before I start my pension. I think I'll be babysitting the grandchildren during the summer holidays, then looking for something else.

"It's the end of an era really, I just want to thank all the customers."
